On the 7th November 2008 Glasgow Lace Group celebrated its 25th birthday with a party for past and present members. I made the cake and decorated it with the Group’s logo which had been designed by my daughter, Ruth.
In ‘Lace’ 51, July 1988, Ruth wrote:
Although Glasgow Lace Group was started in 1983, it did not have a logo until recently when I had the idea of designing one after seeing other groups’ logos in ‘Lace’. After several attempts I decided that the best idea was to incorporate the Glasgow coat of arms into the design: the bird, the tree, the bell and the fish (holding a ring in its mouth). These figures are associated with legends about the life of St Mungo, who lived in the sixth century and was adopted as Glasgow's patron saint from the time of his death. His remains are buried in Glasgow Cathedral which was built in his honour. There is a nonsensical rhyme that I learnt in primary school, about the four symbols:
